Breakfast they say is the most important meal of the day. A good breakfast can make you feel energized and focused to face the challenges that the day throws up. What better way to start of the day but with a healthy breakfast of some French toast.

In France this simple food item is called "pain perdu" since people often use stale bread and that makes it even more delicious. However this easy recipe is also very nutritious with the bread providing the carbohydrates, protein being provided by eggs and calcium and other nutrients being provided by milk and other ingredients.

Here are some simple recipes that will help you make delicious French toast for 4 people.

French Toast Recipe

Ingredients

  • 2 to 3 Eggs
  • 8 Bread slices (let the bread slices be thick cut)
  • 1 cup milk (around 250 ml)
  • 2 tablespoons of butter (try and ensure that the butter is melted)
  • ½ tablespoon sugar
  • Salt to taste (around ½ teaspoon)
  • ½ tablespoon vanilla (optional)
  • ½ tablespoon cinnamon

Process

  • Crack the eggs in a bowl and whisk them. Add milk and continue mixing the eggs and milk. Add salt and sugar to this mixture along with vanilla, if you have opted to use this ingredient.
  • Take a pan and put it on the stove and heat it till it is medium hot. Add the butter to the pan so as to ensure that the bread won't stick to the pan. Those who don't wish to use butter can use a non stick pan.
  • Coat each slice of bread on both sides with the mixture of milk and eggs. Then place the bread slice on the pan. Cook the bread till it becomes golden brown on both the sides. Repeat the procedure with all the slices of bread.
  • Serve the toast with some syrup and cinnamon. Some people like their French toast bare while others enjoy it with hot apple sauce and some powdered sugar as well.

Some Tips

For easy blending of the eggs allow them to sit at normal room temperature 10 to15 minutes before cracking them.
Try and use bakery bread instead of factory bread since it tastes much better. Also stale bread should be preferably used since it absorbs the mixture easily and tastes more delicious. This is a wonderful recipe that can be prepared and served with ease at parties. To make this recipe slightly spicy, add ground nutmeg and cinnamon to the mixture of eggs and milk along with vanilla extract and salt. To make the French toast with hint of sweetness, lightly sprinkle some sugar once the toast becomes golden brown after frying. Some people also love their French toast served with some delicious maple syrup.

Baked French Toast Recipe (Serves 4)

Ingredients

  • 12 Bread slices (The bread slices should be of normal thickness)
  • 8 eggs
  • 2 cups of milk (around 500 ml)
  • 1 cup of cream (around 250 ml)
  • 1 cup brown sugar (around 250 ml)
  • 6 ounces of butter (around 170 g)
  • ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract

Equipment

  • Baking dish that is preferably wide and shallow.
  • Oven
  • Saucepan

Process

  • Grease the baking dish and place the bread slices at the bottom of it.
  • Beat the eggs and add the other ingredients such as milk, cream, vanilla and cinnamon to the eggs and mix this well. Pour this mixture in the baking dish over the bread slices.
  • Preheat the oven to a temperature of 180°C (350°F)
  • Put a saucepan on the stove over gentle heat and melt the butter and sugar in the pan. Stir this mixture continuously and take care that the butter or sugar does not burn. Once the butter and sugar is completely melted pour the mixture over the contents in the baking dish.
  • Bake the contents without a cover for a period of around 40 minutes. Ideally the top of the contents in the baking dish turns golden brown in this time.
  • Cut portions and serve along with sugar or syrup as per personal preferences.

French toast recipe for 4 people (Baked and with apples and raisins)

Ingredients

  • 12 Bread slices (Normal thickness)
  • 8 eggs
  • 2 cups of milk (around 500 ml)
  • 1 cup of cream (around 250 ml)
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 2 cups apples (peel and dice the apples)
  • 1 cup raisins
  • 6 ounces of butter (around 170 g)
  • 1 cup brown sugar

Equipment

  • Baking dish that is wide and shallow
  • Oven
  • Saucepan

Recipe

  • Grease the baking dish and place the bread slices at the bottom of the dish.
  • Beat the eggs and add the other ingredients such as milk, cream, vanilla and cinnamon to the eggs and mix them well. Add the apples and raisins to this mixture and pour it over the bread in the baking pan.
  • Preheat the oven at a temperature of 180°C (350°F)
  • Take a sauce pan and melt the butter and sugar in it. Stir it continuously so as to take care that the butter or sugar does not burn. Once the butter and sugar are melted and mixed well pour it on the contents of the baking dish.
  • Bake the contents without cover for a period of 40 minutes till the top portion of the contents turn golden brown.
  • Cut portions and serve along with syrup or sugar.
