The Garlic is a fundamental flavoring agent in most households irrespective of whether one is a vegan or non-vegan. Garlic is advantageous to health if eaten raw everyday but due to the strong odor, crushed garlic can keep away not only health ailments but also your near dear ones. Yet it is highly convincing for one to accept negligible drawbacks in comparison to a bundle of health gains.

Use the Garlic in the Right Way

  • Garlic is not to be used in cooking along with the peel as the useful components remain trapped within and get destroyed.
  • The major component of Garlic is Allicin, which is the major contributor of benefits within it. A whole clove of Garlic used in cuisines is not of much food value. It would only add flavor. The ideal technique is to crush Garlic cloves before use to release Allicin. It should also be noted that crushed garlic should not be left in open for long and must be used immediately.
  • Another practice that is commonly followed is peeling the garlic cloves and storing it for future use. Peeled garlic is ideally to be used within short while. Storing the peeled cloves for a longer duration causes the loss of potent compounds that are good for health. This is due to the chemical reaction that occurs between Allicin and the other components.

Garlic Health Benefits

The fleshy bulb of Garlic is a store house of health benefits. Eating a clove of garlic is proven to be an essential tip to maintain a good health.

  • Allicin is known to be having anti-carcinogenic properties. Hence Garlic keeps a check on the compounds which are cancerous in nature and lead to tumor formation.
  • Garlic brings down the LDL level (commonly known as the bad cholesterol) in the body. It is also known to reduce the blood pressure and can prove to be beneficial in hypertensive patients. These two benefits in turn bring down the risk of heart attack.
  • Garlic is also a potent antiseptic. It is a natural antibiotic with both anti-bacterial and anti-fungal properties. If consumed regularly, garlic can guard you against infections.
  • Garlic acts as an aphrodisiac by improving blood circulation and delaying erection.
  • Garlic is also proven to be beneficial in pregnant women to prevent high blood pressure during pregnancy (a condition commonly known as pre-eclampsia).

If odor is the only concern to avoid eating garlic then there are solutions to this problem.

  • Chew the garlic clove at night before going to bed followed by drinking a glass of milk. Avoid consuming in the day time as it gives out a strong smell.
  • Use crushed garlic cloves generously in most of the cuisines prepared, especially vegetables, sauces and curries. This not only gives you the health benefits but also enhances the taste of the food.

The garlic has immense health promoting advantages with most of them being well documented. A normal individual may consume garlic on a daily basis as per the recommendations. In case of individuals with some health disorder it is advisable to consult a medical practitioner before making it a part of the regular diet regime.  This is necessary to ensure that the consumption of garlic is beneficial rather than detrimental.
