There is no joy greater that curling up on a couch with your sweetheart and watching some wonderful romantic movies. Some movies standout in the audience memory because of their strong storyline, wonderful characters, memorable lines and the incredible chemistry between the lead characters. These movies renew your flailing faith in love and some movies help you get over a painful heartbreak. Perhaps this is why the romance genre has always had such a fan following.

Here is my assembled list of best romantic movies of all time:

Gone with the Wind
This incredible adaptation of the wildly successful novel left the movie goers spellbound. Vivien Leigh played the character of Scarlet O’Hara while Clark Gable left women gasping for more as he played the role of the rugged and charming Rhett Butler. Gone with the Wind released in 1939 and even now is considered to be one of the most romantic movies of all times and a complete classic. This love story depicted the civil war and  the love element made it wildly successful. It was one of the Oscar winning romantic movies and won as many as 10 academy awards. The chemistry between the two main characters makes this movie one timeless tale of true love.

Breakfast at Tiffany’s
Breakfast at Tiffany’s starred Audrey Hepburn and was released in 1961. This wonderful tale displayed the predicament of Holly played by Hepburn who dreams of marrying a wealthy person but who ends up falling for a starving author. Her confusion and fear of commitment was beautifully displayed by Hepburn. The movie became particularly popular for its tender and touching last scene. The fear and deep yearning we have towards true love was beautifully presented in this movie and that is what made it such a popular movie.

Doctor Zhivago
Released in 1965 Doctor Zhivago starred Omar Sharif and Julie Christie. Set on the backdrop of the Russian revolution this movie dealt with the effects of communism and touched a chord with the audience for its theme of love found and eventually lost.  This romantic drama is considered among the best romantic movies and won five academy awards.

Romeo and Juliet
Romeo and Juliet released in 1968 and is perhaps the most beloved love story of all times. This sensual movie included enticing visual imagery and proved the fact that Shakespeare and his stories will continue to fascinate people.

Casablanca
Released in 1942 Casablanca can easily be termed as one of the top romantic movies of all times. This passionate love story is set in times of turbulence and war. Casablanca featured a love triangle and Humphrey Bogart played the remarkable character of a saloon owner drawn towards his past lover. This movie earned a cult following and enjoyed tremendous popularity particularly because of its famous good bye scene.

Love Story
Released 1970 Love story is the ultimate tear jerker and a beautiful tale of sacrifices people make for love and for each other. "Love means never having to say that you are sorry" was how the movie was sold to people. Love story was also one of the most popular Oscar nominated romantic movies with as many as 13 nominations and 11 wins.

An Affair to Remember
An Affair to Remember starred Cary Grant and Deborah Kerr and was released in 1957. This ultimate love story showed the main characters engaged to others. These individuals meet on a cruise and cannot resist the chemistry and attraction they feel for each other. Following numerous twists love triumphes in the end and this movie revealed how true love manages to overcome all obstacles.

When Harry met Sally
This romantic comedy starring Billy Crystal and Meg Ryan released in 1989. This movie explored the experience of falling in love. It also reflected the theme of friendship between a man and a woman over a period of time. The camaraderie between the characters and the simple story profoundly touched the audience.

Jerry MaGuire
Perhaps the most poignant moment in this movie was when the lead character said "You complete me". Jerry MaGuire starred Tom Cruise, an enterprising sports agent who has a change of heart in his line and eventually loses his job but ends up getting his soul back. In these professional problems he finds a supporter in Renee Zellweger who sees him as her ultimate hero. As she supports him in his battles he is finally able to see his life incomplete without her and true love triumphs.

My Fair Lady
My Fair Lady starring Audrey Hepburn in yet another scintillating performance was the ultimate fairytale story. It depicted the transformation of "Gutter Snipe" Eliza Doolittle into a gorgeous and elegant lady. The person responsible for this transformation falls in love with her and he realizes it only after he almost loses her. 

As Good as It Gets
Released in 1997 this delightful romantic comedy that also had elements of drama was a runaway hit with the audience. It won as many as 7 academy awards and starred Jack Nicholson and Helen Hunt in the lead roles. The line, "You make me want to be a better man" was the most memorable line in this movie. The movie beautifully depicts the evolution of relationships and how love can actually be a transformative force in our lives.

The English Patient
This is one of the most revered romantic movies of modern times. This movie is an adaptation of Michael Ondaatje’s acclaimed work of literature and displays the compassionate and loving side of the human natures during difficult times.

Brokeback Mountain
Released in 2006 Brokeback Mountain was a brave and radical story that was beautifully presented. Backed by stellar performances this story showed the tender love and emotions between two men and the pain of losing the one you love.

Titanic
Released in 1997 this movie was appreciated by most people for the love story delicately woven into this tragedy. The soundtrack and special effects were also exceptional and this movie won 11 academy awards.

Amelie
Release in 2001 Amelie is a delightful story revolving around shy and quiet Amelie played to perfection by Audrey Tautau and her quest to spread a little bit of happiness in the world. This film was much appreciated for its childlike innocence and colorful presentation.
