What are Antioxidants?

With the intake of food, various chemical reactions occur in our body. Oxidation is one such reaction that causes the release of free radicals. Excessive release of the free radicals is damaging to the body by being a major cause of many diseases and hence needs to be kept in control. Antioxidants, because of their reducing property keep a check on these oxidation reactions thereby preventing the release of free radicals.

Here are some pleasing food sources that are rich in antioxidants:

  • Havent we heard of the saying that goes as An Apple a day keeps doctor away? Indeed an apple being one of the richest sources of antioxidants is a naturally protecting fruit that keeps a check on the oxidative stress.
  • Berries of a wide variety are highly enriched with antioxidant properties. One may opt for anyone among the array of berries like Blueberries, Blackberries, Cranberries, Raspberries, Strawberries, etc. one cup of any one of these is the recommended serving.
  • Other fruits like Plums and Cherries are also recommended.
  • Coming to the vegetables, the beans are the most popular sources of antioxidants. The Kidney beans and Black beans are some of the examples. Vegetables like Tomatoes, Broccoli, Spinach and carrots etc are necessary to be consumed in the form of salads in our daily diet because of their richness in antioxidant properties.
  • Dry fruits especially the nuts like Walnuts, Hazelnuts and Pecans etc have antioxidants stored within them.
  • Whole grain cereals are a rich source of Vitamin E which itself acts as an antioxidant.  This dietary source if included in daily intake can hamper the progression of diseases like Alzheimers and Arthritis.
  • Intake of soy on a regular basis in the right limits can prove to be highly beneficial especially in women in menopausal phase. The antioxidant qualities of soy protect from problems that the woman may be prone to acquire after menopause like Osteoporosis, Breast cancer and cardiac problems etc.
  • Tea is one beverage that has been proven to have the richness of antioxidants but only in recommended forms like Black tea, Green tea, Ginger tea and lemon tea etc.
  • The aromatic Garlic is one the important condiments that has antioxidants packed within it. It is recommended to be consumed in the roasted form along with whole breads.

The consumption of the food sources of antioxidants are bound by certain dietary recommendations which are required to be followed under the guidance of a medical practitioner. The reason being that, any thing consumed in excess can be harmful. For example fruits have a higher content of sugar in them so high consumption of fruits can disturb the body sugar equilibrium.
