The south beach diet is spread out in phases, where the first phase includes consumption of lean protein, high-fiber legumes, low-fat dairy products and vegetables; the second phase includes eating fresh whole fruits, high-fiber whole grains and source of proteins such as shellfish, chicken, turkey, lean beef and pork or soy protein. Atkins Diet

Atkins diet was formulated by Dr. Robert Atkins and is very popular among people aiming for weight-loss. Atkins diet blames refined carbohydrates for rise in metabolic disorders. Atkins diet is a low-carb diet which involves lower intake of foods rich in carbohydrates (such as sugar, flour and high-fructose corn syrups) in order to improve body metabolism. This makes the body burn stored fat rather than the new glucose which gets added. Dr. Atkins referred to insulin as the fat-producing hormone, hence people should avoid excessive intake of carbohydrates as the body will release insulin to convert excess carbohydrates to fats. Some of the high carbohydrate foods that need to be avoided while on Atkins diet are white bread, doughnuts, cereals, sugar, pasta, rice, asparagus, beans, broccoli, etc. Atkins diet can be a dangerous thing to do if done for a extended time length. U.S. Surgeon General C. Everett Koop argues that Atkins diet is "unhealthy and can be dangerous". Several other institutions from the US that oppose the Atkins diet are National Academy of Sciences, AMA, ADA, American Cancer Society, American Heart Association and the Cleveland Clinic.

Scarsdale Diet

Scarsdale Diet was created by Dr. Herman Tarnowerby in the 1970s. Scarsdale diet involves intake of carbohydrates for a period of 7 to 14 days. Instead of having foods with carbohydrates, the Scarsdale diet recommends vegetables, fruits and lean sources of protein. The Scarsdale diet promises quick weight loss of up to 20 pounds in just two weeks. The idea of this diet is that if carbohydrate intake is restricted, the body will break down stored glucose for energy rather than relying on further food intakes. Some of the principles of this diet include chewing food thoroughly, drinking at least 4 glasses of water daily, allowing at least two hours in between meals and avoiding alcoholic beverages. This diet suggests that if you feel hungry between meals, carrots and celery can be consumed as snacks to suppress appetite. Generally, no problems are ssociated with this diet if done for a limited time frame.
